Sierra Energy Seeks Chemical Engineer

Sierra Energy, a clean-tech start-up, is seeking a full-time, experienced Chemical Engineer to add to its highly motivated, forward-thinking team.
With national attention from the New York Times and contracts with the Department of Defense and the California Energy Commission, Sierra Energy is commercializing a revolutionary gasification technology for the conversion of different waste material types into a clean intermediate syngas that can be converted into liquid fuels, hydrogen, electricity and chemicals. The engineering team is focused on designing distributed small-scale standardized platforms that can be readily-deployed to a number of project locations within a very short time frame.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works directly with the CTO, project manager, clients, outside consulting groups and/or vendors
- Will be the lead Chemical Engineer with a primary focus on Process Safety Management (PSM) and process design. Tasks may include:
- Setting-up and coordinating PSM programs (PPE, hazardous materials review, materials of construction, operator training etc.)
- Performing risk assessments (HAZOP, What-If, FMEA, LOPA etc.)
- Reviewing equipment/vessel designs to ensure they meet all applicable codes (ASME, NFPA, CGA, API, OSHA etc.)
- Performing calculations and studies to establish potential process hazards
- Developing operating plans and procedures
- Assisting in the development of control strategies for the plant’s main DCS
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering
- 10+ years experience in Chemical Engineering related activities
- Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM)
- Experience with design-through-installation of projects and process optimization/plant reliability
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must be a self-starter and be able to work autonomously, but also be willing to collaborate as part of a dynamic, multi-faceted team
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- PE registration
- Experience working with large EPCs, engineering design firms and/or fabrication shops
- Experience with Electrical, Instrumentation and Control tasks (valve and instrument selection, DCS/HMI design and use etc.)
- Experience with Oxygen (design for use, cleaning and inspection) and Hydrogen (design for use)
- Proficiency in the use of various computer software applications (ChemCAD, ASPEN, HSC etc.)
